1934 — A Mission Begins
American Rescue Workers in Williamsport was founded in 1934 by the compassionate Rev. Williams Morehart. His mission began with the establishment of Calvary Rescue Mission, a small duplex off W. Edwin Street that provided food and shelter for those experiencing hardship and homelessness in the community.
1950 — A New Chapter of Leadership
After Rev. Morehart’s health declined in the mid-1950s, Rev. Russell Pidcoe continued the mission and expanded its reach throughout the region.
1959 — Becoming the Williamsport Corps
In 1959, the ministry merged with the American Rescue Workers National Organization, officially establishing the Williamsport Corps and strengthening the organization’s long-term impact in North Central Pennsylvania.
1968 — Expanding Shelter Services
As community needs grew, ARW relocated to a larger house on Lycoming Street in 1968. The property was converted into a shelter to serve more individuals in need.
1969 — Rapid Ministry Growth
Under the leadership of Adjutant and Mrs. Charles Dederick, the ministry expanded rapidly. New thrift stores were opened, a warehouse for donations was secured, and a youth ministry was established to support local families and children.
1975 — A Permanent Home for Ministry
ARW purchased St. John’s Reformed Church in 1975, creating a central hub for shelter programs, educational services, worship, and outreach ministries.
1980 — Expanding Services for the Homeless
Captain Claude Astin Jr. assumed leadership in 1980 and continued expanding the organization’s outreach. The purchase of the former Lowry Electric Company building allowed ARW to provide shelter and support for more homeless men in the area.
1990 — Growth Across the Region
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, American Rescue Workers broadened its services by opening shelters for families, women, and children. The organization also founded the Love Center in Jersey Shore, extending support services to neighboring communities.
1996 — National Leadership Transition
In 1996, Colonel Claude Astin Jr. became Commander-in-Chief of the American Rescue Workers National Organization.
1997 — National Headquarters Relocate to Williamsport
A year later, in 1997, the National Headquarters of American Rescue Workers permanently relocated to Williamsport. Majors Sam and Dawn Astin were appointed as Commanding Officers and continued advancing the organization’s mission of compassion and service.
2006 — Opening the Social Service Center
In 2006, ARW opened its new Social Service Center, further enhancing its ability to provide assistance, shelter, and resources to individuals and families in need.
2025 — A New Generation of Leadership
After 45 years of faithful service to American Rescue Workers, Directors Sam and Dawn Astin retired in 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassionate leadership, ministry growth, and community impact. Their decades of dedication helped shape ARW into a cornerstone of hope and support throughout the region.
In the same year, Ben Hazen stepped into leadership as the new Executive Director, beginning a new chapter for American Rescue Workers while continuing the organization’s long-standing mission of serving those in need with compassion, dignity, and faith.
Today — Continuing the Mission
Today, American Rescue Workers continues its long-standing mission of providing hope, shelter, food, and support throughout the community. Operations such as the Elmira Street warehouse reflect the organization’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, outreach, and serving those in need.
